Bright Future (アカルイミライ Akarui mirai) is a 2003 Japanese film written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The film's plot, centering mostly around Joe Odagiri's character Yuji, explores the clash between generations and the difficulty of youth finding their own path in life with the older generation still trying to guide them along their own path. This overall message is conveyed through use of several prevalent metaphors as well as dialogue in which characters directly voice the frustrations and wishes of the generation they represent. Throughout the film Yuji receives guidance from different people, each trying to pull him in a different direction, with the exception of his only slightly older friend Mamoru (Tadanobu Asano) who seemingly wants nothing more than for Yuji to realize a bright future of his own and disregard the paths of everyone around him - including Mamoru himself. Mamoru wants this so much, in fact, that he commits a senseless and brutal murder in order to trigger a sequence of events that will eventually make it possible.
