Why'd you pick the cute little child actor?--Kintetsubuffalo 15:22, September 24, 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Kintetsu. Well, various reasons... 1) I'm a huge Ozu fan. 2) Always loved Tokkan Kozo. 3) He exudes a certain naughty charm which I aspire to when I'm not being just cantankerous. 4) True, he fled Nikkatsu when they turned to churning out Roman Pornos, but I like to think he watched them, even if he didn't want to appear in them. That would be me too ;-) 5) when he did get to be an old guy, he was known as "Tokkan Jiji"-- which sort of translates to "The 'Get outta my way' Grampa"-- which is another characteristic to which I sometimes aspire. 6) I'd long thought "Dekkappai" wasn't very appropriate for work on general Japanese cinema, and I'd wanted to change it at Wikipedia for a while... Probably more reasons will come to mind later. Tokkan Kozo 15:48, September 24, 2010 (UTC)

Hello, is this http://www.movieposterdb.com/poster/c9a34342 really Ugetsu monogatari poster? Snek01 19:24, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

May I upload images with filename with Japanese characters if I do know neither proper romanization nor English name? Snek01 19:24, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, welcome, Snek! I forgot to thank you for finding the color poster to Pearl Queen, and I've replaced our image with that one.
Yes, that image does seem to be to Mizoguchi's Ugetsu monogatari-- the title and cast listing are correct. It's not the poster I'm familiar with-- you can see that one at Wikipedia. It's probably a lobby card or something like that. Still, it might be good to use instead of the other. I think it's good to use different images from WP when we can.
Sure, it's fine with me if you upload using the Japanese characters, if you don't know the English or the transliterations. Someone else can fix them later, and in the meantime they will help with searches. This is what I've been doing with cast listings-- link the Japanese characters. Then when articles get started on the performers, it's much easier to find the films they've been in that we already have articles started.
Hope you stick around-- I think this can be a great resource for Japanese cinema! Tokkan Kozo 19:34, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

What to do with disambigs like this? 富士に立つ影 Categorize or add disambig template or do nothing else with this? --Snek01 14:00, October 8, 2010 (UTC)

I haven't done any work on disambigs yet. Yes, I think they should be categorized. If you want to start a template, that would be fine, though not crucial, I don't think... Tokkan Kozo 15:45, October 8, 2010 (UTC)

Content merge[]

it seems the wiki here is somewhat sleepy, you being the main active person who works on it, and I was wondering if you or the other admin would consider coming over and helping us at mydramalist.info and merging this wiki's content into it.

Hi Hideki. I'll look at mydramalist, but, personally, I'm quite happy working away here, even though, obviously, it's going to be years of work before we get an adequate representation of Japanese films and film people... I ran into some pretty awful situations at Wikipedia where they get input from too many people who, basically, are opposed to a thorough coverage of any one topic. Maybe you'll consider helping out here? :-) Tokkan Kozo 16:57, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see you include Korean films-- that's one thing I regret about working exclusively here-- I'm interested in contributing articles on old Korean films (I also read Korean). What about "Pink" film? If it is not allowed there, I couldn't work there, as I do enjoy the Pink as much as I do Ozu, Mizoguchi and the rest ;-) ... Tokkan Kozo 17:00, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
Hey, and thanks for your fast reply. If you look around a bit, I do believe we have some Pink films. We have almost everything, what we don't have is pornography -- but I don't believe Pink films fall under that definition, and I don't think this site lists pornography either. I mostly see Pink films as similar to the ecchi genre in animations (we list animations too) -- and we do list ecchi titles.
Hi again, Hideki. Right-- Pink is more akin to US sexploitation of the '60s and early '70s. They were considered "porn" at that time, but I don't think anyone would really classify them that way today. (Except for Wikipedia, but that's another rant.) About excluding pornography-- I don't think we exclude AVs or AV performers here. We do have articles on several AV performers. There is a lot of overlap between higher-profile AV people and Pink/indie cinema/popular culture in general, so it would be inappropriate to outright ban them, I think. Personally, I don't find AVs of much cinematic interest, so haven't worked much on them here, except as they pertain to the wider cinema, but I wouldn't be opposed to someone adding info on them, if that's what they wanted to do... mydramalist looks like a good site, but I think I prefer our own right now. I think I like the format better here (once "personal preferences" are set to block out the ads & other crap.) Also, the emphasis at dramalist (obviously) seems to be more on TV rather than cinema. That said, I'll keep the site in mind for when I get an urge to write on Korean cinema... I'd been thinking about starting a "Yeonghwapedia" for Korean films, but since your site is already in place, that might be a good place to go instead... About a content merge-- User:EIGA-Kevin would be the one to make that decision. Personally, I prefer keeping them separate, for the reasons stated above. Regards. Tokkan Kozo 21:23, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I'm Architeuthidae. I'll help you out with anything you need, especially really obscure Japanese films. Those are my favorites (like Warning from Space). If you're wondering why I have a different name, it's because I am an administrator at a different Wikia site (Napoleon Bonaparte Wiki)--Napoleon of France (Talk) 00:25, April 29, 2011 (UTC)

Also, I'm better with like graphics and logos. If you need any kind of logo or icon or graphic, I'll help you out. I can also research obscure movies, if you need that.--Napoleon of France (Talk) 00:29, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
I have the same exact philosophy, big topics are way too easy to research. Can I copy my Warning from Space article over here?--Napoleon of France (Talk) 02:59, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
I'd say it would be best to start a stub here, then build it up separately. I haven't been copying any of my articles from Wikipedia, because then we should acknowledge the original article. I've just been taking the sources and starting a new article here from scratch. Hopefully we'll have entirely different articles (BETTER, if possible!) Tokkan Kozo 03:11, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I see. I'll work on it later on. I'm studying for my AP and Final Exams right now.--Napoleon of France (Talk) 03:20, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
By the way the girl in your logo is really hot.--Napoleon of France (Talk) 03:42, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
Oh, thanks, but User:Kevin gets the credit for that. He started this Wiki and most of the articles in it, but has been inactive here for a few years-- he's now running the Nipponcinema site. He seems to have concentrated more on current films, while I'm filling out more of the films of the past. (and some new ones). That logo is from Yo-Yo Girl Cop, I think. And yes, she's not bad :-) Tokkan Kozo 03:45, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
Aha, I'll watch that one day.--Napoleon of France (Talk) 03:47, April 29, 2011 (UTC)

Explicit images[]

Hi Tokkan. I'm Brandon from Wikia. I noticed that there are a number of explicit images here on this wiki which are a bit too strong for Wikia and our Terms of Use. File:Hentai taii - Iyarashii seikatsu.jpg is one such image. Could you go through the images here on the wiki and remove the ones that are too explicit, like the aforementioned one? If you have any questions or concerns about this, feel free to let me know on my talk page (that way I'll be notified when you send a message). Thanks! - Brandon Rhea(talk) 01:33, July 28, 2011 (UTC)

  • I may have given the wrong impression, in which case I apologize. It's not the articles that are at issue here. It's solely the explicit images. The written content, from what I've seen here, is perfectly fine. While I certainly understand and appreciate how images help an encyclopedia in illustrating the written content, there are still the Terms of Use that don't allow for things like pornographic images. So like I said, the articles themselves are fine, it's just the explicit images that are the issue here. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 04:05, July 28, 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tokkan. My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. While I understand your position, this is something I have to insist upon. Regardless of how those images are portrayed and the articles that they're illustrating, our Terms of Use state that explicit content isn't allowed and our wiki creation policy makes clear that wikis cannot contain pornography. In regards to this wiki, that includes sexualized nude images and full frontal nudity. Images that violate those rules will have to be removed from this wiki. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 03:46, August 10, 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to help[]

Hi tokkan kozo,

it's me, hideki, again, from mydramalist.info.

I see you started working on a new Korean wiki here, and as I told you before, I think it's really a waste to split the effort, and I invite you cordially to join mdl and contribute everything you can there. We almost have 10,000 titles there.

As for the problems you had with "pornographic" pictures here, I can assume you that as long as you submit pink films (and not anything that counts as pornography, i.e. where "working parts" are shown), they will accepted on mdl. So you'll have the chance to combine two of your interests in one place.

Please consider my offer. You don't have to switch completely and you can still update things here, but at least consider trying our system and see what you make of it.

Konnichiwa? :)[]

Still there?Kintetsubuffalo 03:54, October 3, 2011 (UTC)

Main page tweaks[]

Hello, my name is Nic and I'm a member of the Wikia Content Team. In order to guarantee that your main page continues to function with Wikia's ad policy, I had to make a few tweaks to your main page. - Wagnike2 14:40, November 21, 2011 (UTC)

you want to link eigapedia to geisha world {{subst:Zen shadow}} 20:09, December 21, 2011 (UTC)

Re: Pink Film posters[]

If you believe I've incorrectly deleted an image or images, please let me know the name and I'll look again. The volume of images I'm going through suggests I'm bound to make a few mistakes, so I would appreciate it if you would let me know the file names in a respectful manner. Thanks. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 03:43, February 1, 2012 (UTC)

Renewed offer[]

Hi tokkon kozo, no idea how long it'll take till you read this, but I saw the problems you had with censoring here. I'm reoffering you to join forces with us over on mdl (http://mydramalist.info) and work to extend our database of already almost 15,000 titles. I remind you that unlike wikipedia and wikia, we apply no censorship and remove no content as long as it complies with the guidelines. And our guidelines accept pink films as well. We have also recently added a genre 'erotic' for our users to be able to categorise such films and include/exclude them from the search if they wish so. Hope that you reconsider and give mdl a chance. I know you invested quite a lot of time here only to see some people come about and destroy it, so you're pretty disillusioned, but you can start small on mdl, contribute a few films and see how it works out for you. Who knows, maybe you can even join the staff.

Yours, hideki

Hi hideki. Yeah, I'm pretty burned out on the entire Wikipedia / Wikia thing. However, since leaving here I've continued working hard. Under my old WP name ("Dekkappai" ;-) I uploaded my entire Pink Film poster collection to Blogspot-- posters to more than 3,000 films-- and have been contributing lots of Pink film information to IMDb. IMDb even accepts links to those posters from their film articles. I peak in here to copy the information I contributed, so I don't have to duplicate the searching/translation work for IMDb. So, for the time being, I am very happy at IMDb. There is still a lot of work to do there, lots of films that need listings, lots of biographical data to add... As always, you are quite welcome to copy any of my work here at Eigapedia (or Yeonghwapedia) over to MDL. And I may see you over there eventually! Best regards. Checking in[]

I wanted to get in touch and see how things are going on your wiki. I am a staff member here at Wikia, and I noticed that your wiki was growing at a great rate but has slowed down recently. Did you run into an issue or is there something you need help with? We have lot of help on our community wiki, staff blog and in the help pages. Growing a wiki can be a big endeavor, but it looks like you had a great start! Let me know any further help you may need so you can continue to be successful. Cheers, --Sarah (help forum | blog) 22:36, September 5, 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sarah. Yes, the Wiki was progressing very well, I think, and providing a lot of new information on Japanese films not covered in English. I was certainly learning a lot and enjoying contributing here. However Brandon (above) claimed the posters to some films-- those in the "Pink" or "Roman porno" genres-- were "explicit" and then proceeded to delete them, citing "Terms of Use", which I had read before joining. Obviously such judgments are subjective, but I did not consider any of these images to be "obscene, pornographic, abusive, offensive, profane..." or I would not have uploaded them in the first place. Also, before starting work on this genre here, I had consulted the founder of this Wiki about my interest in covering Japanese softcore/Pink films along with the rest of the nation's cinema. He assured me that this would be OK since, as anyone with knowledge of Japanese cinema is aware, "Pink" / "Roman porno" is a major genre, has been for 50 years, and many major film personnel have worked in these films. Several films in this genre are considered by mainstream Japanese critics to be among the best Japanese films ever made. The most extreme of these deleted poster images showed bare breasts or buttocks. Some of the deleted images showed nothing more "explicit" than a woman in a negligee. I had no desire to enter into a subjective debate over what is "obscene", nor to write on films if images of their theatrical posters are not to be allowed here. I have moved on to other projects, including transfering some of my work here over to IMDb and adding a lot more information there. Best regards. Tokkan Kozo (talk) 21:21, September 7, 2012 (UTC)
Hello, Were you and Brandon able to resolve the image issue? We do not review images since we have has cases of pornography added to the site. Once in a while something may be incorrectly deleted, or removed for further review. If you would like me to check in with Brandon just let me know.
